Is Your Dog a Healthy Weight? How to Check in 30 Seconds

Most owners of overweight dogs think their dog is a normal weight. Here is the hands-on check vets use, and why it matters more than almost anything else.

A large proportion of dogs in the UK and US are overweight, and the striking finding in survey after survey is that most of their owners do not think so.

That is not carelessness. It is that we have collectively recalibrated what a normal dog looks like. If every Labrador you see is round, a round Labrador looks right.

Why it matters more than you would think

Body weight is one of the few things an owner controls that has a measurable effect on how long a dog lives. Research following dogs through life has found that those kept lean lived meaningfully longer than their overweight littermates, and developed arthritis later.

Beyond lifespan, excess weight worsens joint pain, increases anaesthetic risk, reduces heat tolerance, and is associated with diabetes and several other conditions.

The 30-second check

This is body condition scoring, and it is done with your hands rather than scales. A number on a scale tells you nothing without context — a muscular boxer and a soft one can weigh the same.

1. The rib test

Run your fingers flat along your dog’s side, with light pressure.

  • **Too thin** — ribs feel like your knuckles: sharp, prominent, no covering
  • **Just right** — ribs feel like the back of your hand: easily found, with a thin covering over them
  • **Overweight** — ribs feel like your palm: you have to press to find them at all

2. The view from above

Stand over your dog and look down.

There should be a clear narrowing behind the ribcage — a waist. A straight line from ribs to hips, or an outward bulge, means overweight.

3. The view from the side

Look at the underline. The belly should rise from the bottom of the ribcage up towards the hind legs. A belly that runs level, or sags, means overweight.

The breed exceptions

Some shapes are normal and should not be corrected:

  • **Sighthounds** — greyhounds, whippets, lurchers — normally show some rib and a dramatic tuck. That is correct for the breed.
  • **Bulldogs and pugs** have little visible waist even at a healthy weight, so rely on the rib test.
  • **Very fluffy breeds** must be assessed by hand.

If your dog is overweight

**Do not crash diet.** Aim for roughly 1-2% of body weight per week. Faster is not better.

**Weigh the food.** Kitchen scales, not a cup. Cup measurements vary by a surprising amount and almost always in the generous direction.

**Count treats honestly.** For a week, put every treat your dog gets into a jar as well. Most people are startled by the result.

**Cut by about 10%** and reassess in a month rather than halving the portion.

**Keep walking**, but do not rely on exercise alone — it is very difficult to out-walk over-feeding, particularly in an older dog whose joints limit how much they can do.

**See your vet** before you start. Weight gain is occasionally caused by a medical problem such as hypothyroidism, and prescription weight-management foods are formulated so a dog can eat a satisfying volume while still losing.

If your dog is underweight

Take this as seriously as the opposite. Unexplained weight loss is a meaningful sign and warrants a vet visit, not more food.

Realistic timelines

A dog who needs to lose 15% of their body weight will take three to six months to do it properly. That is normal. Monthly photographs and a monthly hands-on check are more useful than daily weighing.

The honest summary

Ribs easy to feel, visible waist from above, belly tucking up from the side. Check monthly with your hands, not your eyes.

Keeping a dog lean is unglamorous, free, and does more for their health and comfort than almost anything else you can buy.
