Puppies grow fastest in the first six months, and what they eat during that window has consequences that last for life — particularly in large breeds, where overfeeding causes permanent skeletal problems.

Here is the practical version.

Meals per day

  • 8 to 12 weeks: four meals
  • 3 to 6 months: three meals
  • 6 to 12 months: two meals
  • Adult: two meals for most dogs

Toy and small breeds stay on more frequent meals for longer, because they are prone to low blood sugar. Very small puppies under twelve weeks should not go long stretches without food.

Space meals evenly through the day, with the last one a few hours before bedtime so there is time for a toilet trip afterwards.

How much

Start with the feeding guide on the bag, based on your puppy’s expected adult weight and current age — not their current weight. Then adjust by body condition, which is the real measure.

Check every two weeks:

  • Ribs: easily felt under a thin layer, not visible in a short-coated dog at rest
  • Waist from above: a clear inward curve behind the ribs
  • Tuck from the side: the belly rises towards the hind legs

A puppy who is barrel-shaped from above is being overfed. A puppy with visible ribs, hip bones and spine is being underfed.

The large-breed rule

If your puppy will mature over about 25kg, use a large-breed puppy formula.

Puppies cannot regulate calcium absorption the way adults do. Excess calcium during growth is directly linked to developmental orthopaedic disease, and the damage is permanent.

Three things follow:

  1. Use a food formulated for large-breed growth
  2. Never add calcium, bone meal or a “growth” supplement to a complete puppy food
  3. Do not feed adult food to a large-breed puppy either — it is usually too low in the nutrients they need, even though the calcium is lower

Which food

Look for a complete food meeting AAFCO or FEDIAF growth (or all life stages) profiles, from a manufacturer that employs a qualified nutritionist and runs feeding trials.

Keep your puppy on whatever the breeder or rescue was feeding for the first week at least. Changing home, routine, people and food in the same week is how you get diarrhoea.

To change: five to seven days, increasing the new food gradually.

Treats and training

Treats should stay under ten percent of daily calories — and puppies are being trained constantly, so this adds up fast.

The solution most trainers use: measure the day’s food into a pot each morning and use part of it as training rewards. Kibble works fine for easy exercises; save the cheese and chicken for hard ones.

Water

Always available, changed daily. The only exception some people make is lifting the bowl an hour or two before bed during toilet training — that is reasonable for a healthy puppy, but never restrict water during the day, and never in hot weather.

Feeding speed and puzzle feeding

A puppy who inhales food swallows air, which causes discomfort and regurgitation. It also wastes the single best enrichment opportunity of the day.

A maze bowl that turns a thirty-second meal into several minutes of work. Choose a shallower pattern for a small or flat-faced puppy.

A stuffable rubber toy does the same job while teaching a puppy to settle alone, which is why it is worth reserving one exclusively for crate time.

Softer rubber made for puppy teeth and gums. Stuff it with soaked kibble or wet food and freeze it — a frozen one lasts several times longer and soothes teething at the same time.

When to switch to adult food

  • Small breeds: 9 to 12 months
  • Medium: around 12 months
  • Large: 15 to 18 months
  • Giant: 18 to 24 months

If your puppy is neutered before this point, watch the body condition closely. Metabolic rate drops noticeably after neutering and portions usually need reducing by ten to twenty percent.

Storage

Buy a bag size you will use within about six weeks of opening. Fats oxidise, and stale food loses palatability and nutritional value.

Airtight storage with a sealing lid. Put the whole bag inside rather than tipping the kibble in — the bag has a fat barrier, and you keep the batch code in case of a recall.

Things to watch for

Persistent diarrhoea in a puppy is not normal and dehydrates them fast. See a vet, particularly if they are not fully vaccinated.

A pot-bellied puppy with a dull coat may have worms. Follow the worming schedule your vet recommends.

Refusing food for more than a day, or refusing food alongside lethargy or vomiting, needs a same-day call.

A puppy who is always ravenous and not gaining needs investigating rather than more food.

Feeding in a multi-dog house

Feed puppies separately from adults. Adult food does not meet growth requirements, adults will steal from a puppy, and mealtimes are the most common flashpoint in a household with a new dog.

Separate rooms, or a crate, or a baby gate. Every meal, no exceptions, until you are certain.
